Was thinking of buying an 89-92 era 4x4 Ranger (don't have one picked out yet, just looking for now) and noticed that they have two different V6's available. Was wondering if one was a better choice then the other, or if it did not matter? Would be mostly street driven with occasional off road/camping use.
The 4.0L was a development of the 2.9L. Both are pretty reliable but prone to head issues if overheated (the 2.9L much more so). The 4.0L is better on power.
From what I see on here, the 4.0L's mileage is better, but not by much.
I'd say 4.0L just for easier access to parts, better aftermarket, plus if you overheat it it more than likely will be alright. Not so much for the 2.9L. Both engines are quite good in their own right when properly taken care of.
Stay with the pushrod unit also, early sohc had cam chain tensioner issues. ('97 & up to not sure what year) If you can find one with a 5 speed, all the better.
Thanks fo the info, I am looking at the 89-92 era, so 97 and up is not an issue. I am hoping to find a good '92 but will take anything in that 4 year span. The '87 I am getting will be just for going to and from work, and most likely will be given back to my brother, when I do purchase the 4x4 Ranger. So, I will look for a '92 with the 4.0 and a 5spd.
