Broken Valve Spring

Has anyone else had a problem with a broken valve spring. My work has a 2006 E250 Econoline with a 4.6 L engine, it has 19,000 miles. I came in hammering so we sent it to the dealer to be fixed under warranty. It was driven to the dealership. The dealer pulled the intake and said they found water in the manifold and that the engine must had been flooded and refused to replace it. They never pulled the valve covers or the pan. The vehicle had the oil, oil filter, and air filter changed prior to the problem changed 60 miles prior to the problem. The vehicle oil pressure was fine by the oil gauge it was only hammering. We got the vehicle back to our mechanic who pulled the engine. We ordered a remanufactured engine from Jasper engines and paid to have them examine the engine to see what the engine failure was. Jasper sent a report back and they found that one of the exhaust valve springs had broken off between the first and second coil. They included the broken spring, rocker and valve with the report. Jasper found on other problems with the engine. So far the dealer and Ford have refused to do anything. Has anyone else had a valve spring failure?

Can't say I've heard of any breaking. Must have been a bad spring from the get-go.

You are right, the problem was the dealer who did a poor job of diagnosing the problem. Of the millions of valve springs Ford uses there have got to be some bad ones in the batch.

Dave52,

My 04 F150 Lariet 5.4 3-valve drop one two weeks ago. According to the dealer, the rocker arm bearing seized and when it let go, it took out the keeper and dropped the valve into the cylinder. Made a hell of a racked when it died.

Ford is saying it's not their problem, as the truck is over the milage warrentee, but it still sucks. I'm in the process of replacing the engine as we speak.

So I guess it's not unheard of...

2006 F-150 Broken Valve Spring

36800 miles. Diving down the road and experienced problem. Dealer said it was a broken valve spring. Oil was fine, no temp issues and the engine was not hot. Has any one else had similar problems?

There are random reports of valvespring failures on modulars. When you have the "lowest bidder" war going on with a supplier, they will do what they need to in order to keep the supply contract. This means in some cases that you source your raw materials (valvepsring wire in this case) from the lowest bidder...which can be bad if it's contaminated.

I'm seeing more and more of this stuff. Had the same thing happen to my '05 6.8L @ 60K miles. Didn't drop the valve-it bent the valve before it dropped into the cylinder. That cracked the valve guide, but saved the shortblock from damage.

How many miles on it again? 74000? Seems to me that you're beyond the warranty term, and expecting the manufacturer to cover a repair when you're beyond the warranty term is a bit much.
Good luck expecting anything different from Toyota. You're in for a rude awakening.

Yes it is beyond the warranty. I just had my 2009 F150 with 37800 get a broken valve spring replaced. Completely covered, no charge. However, having a valve spring break in the first place is, at 37800 or 74000, a bit ridiculous. Never heard of problems like this in the old days. The question is the quality of parts being put in the engines, and yes we do expect the manufacturer to make a more reliable product. That is not asking a bit much.
I left Toyota and bought a Ford F150 because they've been making them for so long I expected a pretty reliable vehicle. My rude awakening has arrived with Ford, not Toyota.
So now when I get past 60,000 I have to pay for faulty valve springs to be replaced?

You actually need someone to tell you what the terms of the warranty on the vehicle you purchased? Are you incapable of reading and understanding that a 60K mile warranty is 60K miles? Get a clue, and figure out what you're doing wrong because with a crappy attitude toward me like that, you're not gonna get any sympathy or help.

I had one break from CompCams!
0 Miles, on the first start-up. Brand new spring broke and destroyed a new built short block.
Cost me about 4K to pull the motor, have it rebuilt with all new bearing and pistons.
Comp would not help me out with one penny!

Sorry didn't mean to offend you.

To clarify, I have no problem with the warranty, reading it, or understanding what is covered.
As I said, the dealer covered the fix, no charge. I was very happy with them.

My point was more towards the quality of parts/workmanship in the truck.
Like you said a couple quotes ago, the lowest bidder syndrome is alive and well.

I just expect an engine to not have internal parts failing at low mileages, under warranty or not. I suspect we all have the same expectations.

Now I have to wonder what other faulty valve spring is in my engine, as I assume they all came out of the same box.

It's my first Ford and quite frankly I'm a little surprised. Today I was driving in the rain and water leaked all over my daughter in the back seat from the back window. Not a sliding window, a solid window. 38200 miles.

You're arguing with the deceased.
