Speedometer/Odometer Problem

I have an 88 F150 5.0L, and my speedometer only goes up to 85, so while I was driving on the highway today, doing about 100mph my speedometer completely rolled over to 0mph and then stopped working all together. It jumps around a little bit while I'm driving (needle jumps up to 50 pr so and then back down), but it certainly doesn't work. My odometer and cruuise control are also not working. I thought the wiring connection might have come loose under the hood, but it all looked fine when I checked. I also thought it could be a fuse, and I will check in the morning, but any advise would be helpful.

Does your year of truck have the speed sensor in the transfer case? Maybe you've stripped the gears on the speed sensor? My 89 250 sensor looked pretty cheaply made, all plastic gears. My 89 250 sensor slides into the transfer case, and the cable runs up to the engine. If that sensor went bad, it would also impact the cruise control I would think.

If your odometer doesn't work any more, I'd most certainly go find the speed sensor and pull it out to see if it's 'okay' and the cable end isn't damaged.

Just brainstorming here. Good luck.

probably the speed sensor gear in the tail shaft(assuming its a 2x4). Its little chincy *** plastic gear. The one on the end of the cable will be grey. If i remember correctly You'l have to get a new gear it from the FORD house. Check the new one against the old. when i did mine i had to do alittle modification to get the new gear to operate correctly. The problem should go away for a while, later you'll need to crack the tranny open and replace the spedo drive gear as well. had the same problem on my 88.
