Hi i'm buying a 429 that is complete from Oil pan to intake. It was totally rebuilt 70k miles ago. It's a 69-71 that came out of a lincoln i was told.
I am looking to do a total rebuild on the engine and am wondering what other people here have used? I was looking at some master rebuild kits that cost around 800 dollars, does that seem correct?
What about doing some performance upgrades? Any ideas will be appreciated.
I'v heard good things about the SCJ heads, is this true? Also for a cam who makes one that makes good power from Idle to 5000?
What about rebuild kits?
if your looking at idle to 5000rpm stay away from the SCJ heads, yes they are good but they are better for top end rpms not bottem end grunt. the iron heads are a better choice in that area.
As to cams, try something like the comp cams xtreme 4x4 series cams they have a couple good ones in that range, and if you don't want comp, then crane adn isky also have some good decent low end cams too. Mainly you seriously want a dual pattern cam (more duration on the exhaust than the intake)
I really meant what I said on the heads, the iron heads you have as long as they don't have the D2VE casting number are probably the best choice for a low rpm street application.
but if you are just really wanting to spend the money on a set of alum heads just so you can have them, then from what I have seen you are wanting take a good look at the TFS street castings. They are an alum reproduction of the early heads like the DOVE's, with some refinements (slightly better flow numbers already come with bigger, stainless valves, etc) and they have better ports out of the box. But like the DOVE heads they are a small chamber (72cc, DOVE are 75cc) so your going to have to be carefull on piston selection to keep the compression down, but you can get away with about 1 point of compression with alum vs iron.
I'v never been a big fan of having something just to say i have it. Would i actually get much of a performance gain from going with the TFS?
BTW do you know of any good rebuild kits?
Honestly on the low end the TFS heads really won't gain you anything, with maybe the exception of allowing slightly higher compression on cheaper gas. They aren't going to hurt low end performce just not going to help it much either. A little work on the factory iron and your going to get about as much gain. The TFS heads won't really help you until your running in the 4000+ rpm range, or your running a lot more cid or some combinations thereof.
as to rebuild kits, I don't use them, I buy my parts individually mainly because no one makes a kit that will have exactly the same parts I would want, so I can't really give you advice on them since I have no personal knowledge of what ones are good. If you see one that you like, you can post a link to it, me or someone can look at ti and tell you if it's decent quality, and if the price is decent or not.
