We have a 2001 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. We bought it new. Today we started experiencing a problem where the radio, clock, rear wipers and interior dome lights will not work when the vehicle is in gear. If it is in park or neutral, everything seems fine. Also, the fan blower runs without the ignition on (keys completely removed from igniton). What could cause this???
Welcom CMartin. When we see problems like this we first look to the GEM (Generic Electronics Module). This device, which is in a black or whit box underneath the driver's dash typically gets wet due to a leaky windscreen and then all kinds of neat 'full moon' crap starts happening.
Is this a part that napa or kragens will carry? I saw something in my websearches (before joining this forum, that said a similar problem was related to a leaky windshield. We did have a small crack (rock chip) repair done on the windshield and now the rain has started so that makes since.
The radio and everything works now (I'm thinking the unit dried since the rain stopped), so my question now is, is the unit bad or do I just need to have the leak found and repaired. I am asking this because I am not a mechanic and I don't know if this part will fail intermittently now that it has failed once. I am taking my car to Ford on Tuesday, and you know they will want to sell me a new one.
