Doing the intake manifold gaskets and was told to check the tsb for new torque values. The tsb says to torque to 71 lb-in. OK sounds good. the next half of the sentence says to then tighten all bolts an additional 90 degrees. wtf? In two years of working on airplanes and 3 on motorcycles ive never seen a torque value that tells you to tighten to a specific value then to just go on ahead and give 'er a good 90 degrees. Should I just go ahead and stick with the haynes recomendation if 44 then 89 lb-in. ?? why would they give you a value as specific as 71 lb-in then tell you to tighten an additional 90 degrees? just a few degrees of turn can add quite a few lb-in of torque.
A lot of engine bolts now are "torque to yield".
For some info on this take a look at http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jk/040303.htm and http://www.robbos.com.au/myweb/Tech_Bolts.htm . Those were just the 2 sites that came up first with a Google search.
You should try torquing some head bolts where they want 2 X 90 degrees. I'm reasonably strong but have a hard time sometimes. They feel like 250 ft. lbs!
