I have a 89' model 460 in my f250 with 120,000 mi on it.
I can go through a qt of oil in two days, roughly 70 mi worth
But the thing is you can't see it coming out anywhere under
acceleration or leaking, the only noticable smoke i see which
is not much is under deceleration with foot of gas peddle and
or going down a hill, I will notice this occasionally, also my
rear tire is black with soot and a slight oily film (very little film).
So here's the question is this due to sticky gummed up rings?
Or i've heard broken rings? but would'nt that make the truck
run bad and idle rough? which it does not over normal lack
of tune up.
This kind of relates but it was with an old 223 I had. I didn't have any major oil leaks or smoke in my exhaust either. But the piston rings were bad on a few cylinders. Try a compression check to see which cylinders aren't as strong as the others. Most likely you will find a few that are less then 80 psi. The amount oil leaking by is just enough to show usage without the blue smoke trail unless it is decelerating as you said.
Okay when you say the rings where bad , how in which way? would you say a can of
that sea foam stuff work if they where just gummed up? Would you be able to tell if the rings where cracked? other than the obvious more smoke.
I feel your pain. I just bought a 88 with 80'000 on the clock, brought it home and changed the oil . i just ran it 300 miles and started hearing lifters tapping .Check the oil and it was 3 qts low! the guy i bought it from only ran it 1000 miles in 3 yrs not sure if he realized how bad it was but im a little sick.It does not smoke going down the road but does a little when first started. I never thought a motor using this much oil could run this good. After searching on here it sounds like i need to start with pvc valve ,vacum test for valve seals or guides, intake leak,or possibley a compression test for the rings .So much for a healthy low miles motor.Maybe avg 4k on a motor a yr is a bad thing.
Yup gonna do a compression chech also, the motor runs great en stuff, just need it to
run good a couple more years so as I can build up my war chest for a rebuild, Im gonna
give myself about 6 grand to do it. Anyhow just wondering if it would create more
trouble ungumming the rings with sea foam if indead that is the problem, or just leave
it as is till im ready hmmmm.
i had the same problem with my 94 460. it was supposed to have 2500 miles on rebuild. when i bought it it was ticking like an exhaust leak, but i come to find out it was a lifter. so i put in new lifters. the lifter valley was very clean and no evidence of any sludge any where so i thought it was good to go. i drove it about 100 miles and while stopped at a light i saw the oil pressure drop. i pulled in to a service station and there was no oil touching the stick! i put 3 qts in. i did have a slight leak from the valve cover gaskets, but no where near 3 qts worth! i havent had time to do a compression check yet. but there is hardly any smoke at all coming out of the exhaust and there is no converter on this truck.
