I have a 1985 F150,4.9,manual 4sp w/od Tires are 235/75/15.The truck is completely stock and runs good.I have read all kinds of post about changing rear gears in all kinds of 4x4 trucks and a few about 2wd trucks that have went to bigger tires.I don't want to change tire sizes but my truck is a dog with 2.47:1 gears and I would like to know if someone has a run 3.55 or 3.73 gears in a truck such as mine and if they liked the change.I realize milage may drop but 2.47:1 behind a 4.9 in the hills of West Virginia is not a good setup.
You needn't be in overdrive while going through the hills. Using third gear is the old high gear in a non-o/d tranny.
If you going fast through the hills though, with 3rd gear, your rpms will be up there.
I have your setup but with a 3.08 axle. I would recommend a higher number axle for your terrain, perhaps a 3.55. My terrain isn't hilly, it's flat to rolling, the 3.08 has no problem.
Your rpms will rise from 1300 to 1850 at 60 mph, but that's still a low rpm level for a pickup at 60 mph. IMO that 2.47 doesn't belong in the Appalachians.
Thanks for the reply.I don't think the 2.47 gears belong in any truck! I have to do some Big Road driving(I-64) when I go to work but even at 70 mph if there is any kind of a hill it will loose everything. Its my first experience with the 300 six and I was just wondering if the(free)3.55 r&p that I have was an ok setup and what other peoples experience was with a setup like mine.
2.47s are a joke. A bad joke. Anyhow, you can fix it with 3.55 gears if you're keeping your SROD or TOD trans, or 3.08 Gears and an NP-435 is a great running combination.
i have a 79 f250 300/6 4x4 with 3.55 gears seems to be an ok marrige for light towing, milage is fair 12-16 beats the heck outa the 8-10 i get with my other trucks (v8s with 4.10s)
"I'm curious how you drive with a 2.47" Its a struggle! I shift into 4th between 55 or 60mph,but then again if I wind up 2nd gear I can hit 60mph with ease!
Interesting. My calculation says you're turning only 1300 rpm at 60 mph. Some of these guys idle faster than that!! If you were on pretty level terrain, you could get some pretty awesome fuel mileage.....until you hit a headwind.
Your exactly right Argo! with these gears its doing all it can to hold 70 mph on level ground and if there is a head wind it is better to slow down to about 60 mph and run it in 3rd gear.I would almost think my mileage would improve when I get the 3.55's put in because the motor would'nt be laboring so hard.
