dont have too but would be smart to prevent a open wire...i never do just watch were the connections go (never done one on these trucks tho) if you do disconnect you will need to reset your radio and stuff
I welded on a new Alt once tucked the wire away and when I was installing the new Alt I bumped the wire it sprang back to its normal position and was weldoing itself to the Alt housing. Luckily it did not ruin anything or even blow a fuse. But man it scared the living hell out of me at first. Now I do not work on the truck without disconnecting the batts.
Back from parts store. $190 incl. tax at Advance Auto.
Batt. light never came on letting me know I had a charging prob.
The past week when after starting the truck the heater fan would run real slow when GP's where cycling for the first 2 min. of engine running. As soon as Gp's would quit cycling the fan would come up to norm speed. The only other indicator was the stock volt guage wasnt coming up to it's normal resting place while driving.
Pulled into Advance, had the guy behind the counter check batts first- both were OK. Started truck up and and Alt. was charging at around ten (volts/amps?), with a full draw on batts(GP's Heater fan, lights,Howard Stern yappin on sirious radio, exc. ) Defintaly needed replaced!
She lasted me 165,996 on the ticker. Not bad I suppose.
