I'm a newby so forgive me if this is stupid. I just bought a 1993 f250 idi manual 5speed w/ 200,000mi. At around 70 mph my engine sounds like it is opening up or something. I can still go faster and it doesn't perform any different when I hear the noise. Is this the governor?
dont know what differential gearing you got there, but 70 is starting to get things tightened up. You might be hearing the cooling fan kicking in.
you also might want to start adding fuel additive to replace the sulfur content in the modern fuel. This will lube the internals of the injection pump and the injectors. Another additive is for the coolant, get some nalcool from caterpillar and stuff a small bottle in the radiator once a year. This will slow down cavitation erosion inside the block.
Hey guys. I'm still having the noise issue on the highway. I've also just had to replace my serpentine belt and apparently, the truck had been burning through belts. Could it be my tentioner? How can I test it?
Also, I have a 4x2 ZF 5 speed with I believe Sterling 10.25" axle. Should I go with the Motorcraft synthetic ATF in the tranny or Royal Purple or similar? Also, what oil to use in the rear end?
Anyone live in Palm Beach County Florida and know of a fair priced diesel mechanic?
Use a 15mm wrench to relieve the tension on the serpentine belt and take it off. Inspect the entire tensioner assembly for any back and forth play where the unit bolts on to the engine. The tensioner spring is bolted on with a Torx 50 (I think). The bolt holding on the pulley is reverse threaded.
When I bought my truck the tensioner unit was bad and I threw four belts in about a week and a half. The last belt grabbed my transmission cooler line and pulled it into the fan. After I replaced the tensioner assembly, no problems.
Tensioner is most likely the culprit, remove the belt, put some tension on the tensioner spring and wiggle the tensioner on the main bolt. Any noticeable movement back and forth requires replacement of the tensioner. Save the tensioner pulley if it is still good as it can be used on the idler below.
