Hey pull on it really hard. If that doesn't work then jump in the back and remove the tailgate panel then yank the right pole that goes from the middle to the right that one controls the lock. Something has to work, the tailgate is pretty simple and shouldn't be to hard to fool around with to figure it out.
Pulling on it really hard bends stuff, as is shown in those pictures.
Understand what you're doing before you start pulling on stuff - the mechanism is only as strong as it needs to be to operate normally. If you pull on the internals, you could bend or break it.
The most likely cause for the problem is the latch release lever below the lower edge of the window. When the window lowers fully it pushes down on an "L" shaped rod that hanges from the handle mechanism. If this rod does not move when the window reaches the bottom of its travel the latch will not release the tailgate. It can be accessed through the inspection cover on the inside of the gate. If the window is going all the way down, chances are the rod has come out of the handle mechansim. The picture links should be helpful in determining what you are looking for inside there.
Make double sure the window is down all the way. Sometimes I roll mine down to the point you can't even see it and the tailgate still won't open. I just hit the button again and sure enough the glass wasn't down far enough.
Sometimes these gates stick due to not being lubricated properly. I think you should kick it from inside the truck. Then when it opens lubricate the hinges heavily. I alway slube up all my door hinges and tailgate once a month!! CHEAP MAINTANCE!!:-X12
