I've got a high idle on my 88', auto F150. I suspect it's around 1200-1400, When I drop it in gear the idle speed go's to relative normal. I've spent sometime trying to find a vacuum leak, but have turned up nothing. I recently discovered when I unplug the IAC it's almost right on, and it doesn't die when in gear. Is my only solution to leave it unplugged? Is there a way to test the valve? I have taken it apart & the plunger moves with ease.
... when I unplug the IAC it's almost right on, and it doesn't die when in gear...
You have described a problem, disconnecting the IAC engine should die inmediately and PCM set an error code, remember the buterfly valve is suposed to be totaly close while trhotle is release, then disconnecting IAC should cut out all Incoming air to engine. Still running? then ther is some air pasing into.
It means :
1º trhotle is geting stuck
2º Acelerator cable is geting stuck
3º Somebody did move the trhotle stop bolt, giving more air
4º IAC is geting stuck
To diagnose if air is entering by trhotle or by IAC, just remove IAC, cover all holes, then try to star engine. Engine running again means air still geting into, engine doesn't run means IAC needs to be replaced.
One of the throttle butterflys has a breather hole.
I have already removed & taken apart as much as possible & the valve moves with ease, I'm just unable to test the voltage activated side of the sensor..
