Tuners and Engine Longevity
I had one of those early 03 and yes it did get better fuel mileage empty I received 19 - 22 mpg and when towing 5 th. wheel @ 9000 lbs, I received 13 to 16 mpg. it started jumping up and down when at idle, about 5k miles Ford replaced the ICP chip on top of the engine and reflashed it, it was the end of the truck performance, mileage went to 14-16 empty, and 9 - 11 towing, it was the last time the truck ever ran OK again, After that ICP change and reflash the truck never ran right again.
Ford took it back and gave me an 04, I blow it up in Oregan, going up Cabbage Hill. Ford took that one back too.
Now I have a late 05 runs great just passed 36k miles it was reflashed once, the only bad point, because I did own an early 03 is poor fuel mileage 14-15 empty, and 9-10 pulling that 5 th wheel

Hey, you forgot to tell us what the mileage was before and after and which tune you found to be the best. Axle ratio, year, wheel tire size, of your truck. I'm thinking of putting a tune on my 07 F250 6.0. Thanks for the info

Regarding mileage, it really has varied over the two years I've owned it, but I've seen as high as 21/22 hwy, with an average of 17 to 19 depending on conditions and my driving style. My real world experience is that the tuner gives me about 2mpg better on average than stock, and according to Superchips the best mileage can be had in "performance" tune, but ONLY if you keep your foot out of it. The Economy tune is perhaps a better option if you don't use as much control of your "leadfoot."
Hope this is helpful!
Sorry... It's an '05 (early build, so '04 in disguise) Excursion with 3.73 limited slip. Stock wheels and tires (I've found, by the way, that using the tuner to bump my tire size up one setting larger from stock results in more accurate speedo readings -- stock it shows about 2mph too fast).

Yes, thanks. I'm trying to get a feel for the economy gain I can expect. Did you put on a new exhaust system ofr is yours still stock? How about air intake? My is a 6.0 with the 373 limited slip but with 20" wheels. RPM at 70mph is around 17500. Big difference from the one I'm used to with 17" wheels which turned 2000RPM at 70mph.

My truck is entirely stock except for the tuner.
