Hello, I am having an issue with my 1999 4.6L F150 shifting. Usually, when I am at 45 - 50 MPH, and the truck is running at around 1100 RPM and I give it a little throttle to increase speed it will, what I consider downshift out of OD, and the RPM will increase by about 500 and the truck will pick up speed. Over the last few days when I try and increase speed, it does not downshift or increase the RPM but jerks a couple of times until I give it more throttle and it forces it to shift to a lower gear, the it will pick up speed and shift back into OD. I have been considering flushing the transmission to correct the issue, but a friend who has had great success getting help in this forum suggested I post here first for assistance.
Any help you can give me will be greatelty appriciated.
Truck info.
1999 F150
4.6L
2WD
108,000+ miles
Transmission fluid has vever been changed to my knowledge. I got the truck at aprox. 50,000 miles.
I do not know the transmission type but will check at my next break.
Any additional information you need, please feel free to ask.
Your transmission is likely good although a transmission flush would not hurt a thing.
Two things come to mind. First of all, change your fuel filter. A clogged fuel filter or partially clogged can effectively lower your fuel pressure and can cause the engine to be running lean causing the spark plugs to miss and the bucking to occur. This could also be a tired fuel pump.
Secondly, have the spark plugs ever been changed? With that many miles, they are certainly tired and can also be working poorly with under the engine loaded like it is under the conditions that you mentioned. Use only Motorcraft plugs. Good luck!
The spark plugs were changed right at 90,000. I doubt that the fuel filter has ever been changed. I will pick one up on my way have and update the post with any changes.
