I just stumbled on the headlight relay mod posted in Tech Articles. It makes alot of sense. has anyone done it. If so were the results noticeable. also one tech article suggested running the Lamp power directly off of the Alternator. Does this risk not charging the battery to full capacity, or will the lights dim up and down with the alternator speed.
One further thought, Iam going to run a wire directly off the battery just to see if the light is brighter. I will post the results later.
Voltage regulator (internal to the alternator on newer models) maintains voltage output regardless of alternator rpm. Thats why its there. So that when you slow down to idle, the voltage doesn't drop down to nothing and when you are cruising the highway you don't blow lamps and electric motors. Also running the headlamps directly off the alternator? whats the diff.? If the alternator is putting out a regulated 13.8 volts like most then the trip the electricity makes through the battery first won't matter. The system will have 13.8 volts running through it. Now an old, dry, or dying battery (dead cell) will create severe resistance in the system and reduce the voltage to every part of the electrical system. Otherwise, automotive electrical systems are designed to take the highest voltage available and use it. Which is why when a voltage regulator fails it is designed to STOP sending voltage through because of dangerous over-volt possibilities. Now if you want to get brighter haedlamps for half a third the lifespan or worse drop to a 6 volt headlamp...they will be really bright for about a week! Otherwise be satisfied with clean functioning headlamps or add a few driving lamps. factory headlamps are only required to light up the road for about 300 ft. in most states on low beam and 500 ft. on high. Sorry to disappoint those who may have doe this mod. But the "brighter" headlamps appear to be because you want them to be. Don't believe me, find a photographer or professional lighting designer (like me) with a Light/lumen meter and have him/her check the peak beam candlepower of the headlamps. They will know what I'm talking about.
