I am looking for performance parts for a 300 I6. I am pulling the motor and tranny to redo the head and replace the clutch (225K miles). I would like to give the truck a little umph (or at least a better sound) while I got everything opened up. I read somewhere that the best things to do is to go to larger valves and stiffer springs, then to go to a small 4 barrel carb and intake as well as a 6 into 2 header. Those are specific things I am looking for, but I am open to whatever someone might have to offer.
wait a while on the larger valves and stiffer springs. thats expensive machining work... if you want the cheap upgrade, go with the headers (or efi exhaust manifolds) and 4bbl intake. then look at either better ratio rockers or a new cam (not both). head work is expensive. i'd get a good port & polish job done before the new valves if i were you. the best way to wake up the six is to let it breathe. more air in and more air out, with less restrictions.
I have a 78 f100. Carburated. I have had the truck for 7 years. Its pretty rusty and noisy (doors dont fit worth a crap). I think it was a father/son project at one time. The motor has been rebuilt before, the shifter has been moved to the floor (albeit backwards), the body has more bondo or something than metal, the panels dont fit very well, and as far as I can tell it has been repainted at least 5 times with the latest coming from a spray can. To give you an idea of the quality of work that was done, rust holes in the bed floor were sealed with roofing tar.
But, to be honest I don't care that much about the appearance. I bought it to be a hauler and it has been all over Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and probably a couple other states hauling car parts for my other projects, dirt and mulch, wood, etc. But the motor is creating a lot of blow by now, the aircleaner has a puddle of oil in the bottom. I think its the valve guides. And the clutch is about gone.
My intenion is to pull the motor and trans, pull the head and have it rebuilt, go thru the motor with new rings, bearings, and gaskets, and put a new clutch in it. I'm not looking to make a race car out of this, just looking for something to sound a little better. It will still be my hauling truck.
Definitely checking out your 300 rebuild in your gallery. Thanks.
NavyMIDN08,
Thanks for the advice. As I stated above, I am not lookign to build some kinda racing truck (although that would be cool). I am just looking for something that will be a little more fun to drive and sound a little meaner. I think I will stick with the breathing exercises for the motor.
