I have a 98 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.. Something odd is going on.. It has 148k miles and runs fantastic except I smell fuel.. I can smell it in the garage.. I'm not sure where it's leaking.. Friends and I have searched and we can't find it.. Only thing I notice odd is a hose on the drivers side by the tank hanging down by the tire.. You can see it if you look under the car..
Anyone have any clues as to what it could be.. It gets bad to where I can smell it in the house if the car is in the Garage.
I would look at the vapor return line going back to the tank, especially if you live in the Northeast where salt is used. That would account for the smell with no signs of leakage.
edit: after posting I see you're from texas, no road salt there, but it still may be the vapor line

I'm not real good with fuel systems.. What am I looking for? Could that hose that's hanging be the vapor line.. Is it suppose to be hooked up to the tank? I never really noticed the hose until the other day.. I didn't think Fuel Tanks had hoses hanging out.. It appears to be a rubber hose..
Find a service manual for it, and check the plumbing. You've got an evaporitive emissions leak, and if the check-engine light isn't already on, it will be soon
Ok.. Little work done.. No CE Light.. Also that was a damn hose it was a huge freakin black Zip Tie.. But here's the deal.. I found this box under the rear. It looks like its the bottom part of the trunk, it's bolted to the underside. There is a rubber hose on one side (passenger side) that goes off somewhere.. Then on the driver side there is some hose clamps but no hose.
My mother said there was a hose hanging on the drivers side and her and my dad didnt know what it was (when I was in Iraq) and they pulled it out.. So i'm wondering.. Does ayone have a clue what that hose was and did it come from that part that is bolted to the underside of the trunk compartment?
I still dont understand why I have this HUGE zip tie on the driver frame rail.. Kinda odd.
That black box sounds like some sort of vapor canister or resevoir. The true charcoal canister for the evap emissions is probably up front in the fender well...
The missing hose probably goes from that resevior/canister to the top of the gas tank - which is why you really REALLY smell it so bad. Thing is, what came off with the hose? Did they break the nipple on top of the tank? etc. etc.
I fear the only way to find out is to drop the tank.
Check out www.crownvic.net the guys on that site are very much into the Vics. I think there was something on that sit about an vapor canister in the back of the car.

I think you'll find the black is the charcoal canister (its replacement). The fiber hose on my Towncar came loose and dragged. It slides up into the frame rail on the left side.

Now im wondering what this is.. I see the hose clamps still there and I think thats what is causing the fuel smell.. I dont understand tho why I have a huge black zip tie on the passenger rear frame rail..
