Hi I need advice i have a 99 f 250 5.4 single cab 4x2. It produces 235hp and 335 torque. I use my truck for work and I pull a 5x10 trailer loaded wish is appx. 3000/3500 lbs. I have to drive through a transmountain road appx. 16 miles long and highest point 5000 fts. There is a point where the hill is 8 grade. Well the point is that I swamp tha tires from 265/75/16 to 285/75/16. I notice a drop of power. in flat land there is no big problem. The worst thing is that I have a 35 foot fifth wheel travel trailer 9500 lbs empty 12500 lbs loaded I use this truck to pullit and didnt have much trouble only strougle a little when going up hill. My cuestion is what upgrades can I do to pull the most torque and/or hp. out of it. I have a set of tires to original requirement 265/75/16 wish I can use when pulling the heavy rv, but I need more power. I know that diesel is the perfect toy to pull but it wont be like till next 2 or 3 years when I could bie one.By the moment I need my current truck to pull my work trailer and rv.What is the advice you give me. Should I change exhaust pipes, headers, programer, axle gears or what. please all you experts tell me what to do,change, brands and prices. thanks.
I dont know what kind of power the 5.4 is capable of making with just bolt ons, but since your 2wd id go for a re-gear. Take a look at radys ring and pinion. I would guess you have 3.73s now, some 4.30s would do the trick.
The 5x10 work trailer isn't a major concern. 4.10 or 4.30 gears will regain your power, but if you're going to pull your 35 foot 5th I would look for a V-10 or PSD truck.
If you insist, a chip of some sort, exhaust mods and a free flowing intake will help, but don't expect milacles. At 12.5K I think you're about 3 tons over your limit. The engine isn't your biggest limiting factor. I think it's your transmission.
