ive got a 73 f250 with a dana 44 6cf 3500 ib 4:09 early 76 the tag number is D6TA AAE what is it exactly and what other front differental will fit it. it ate the spider gears out of it i want to but another differental off the internet and was wondering what others will fit it or does it take a specific one thanks justin
Why not just buy new spiders, or better yet, replace them with a drop in locker like a lockrite, quicklock, etc? If you are set on getting a different differential, up through early 77 should be a direct bolt in with no modifications. Also, 76-77 are disc, which can be a benefit, but then you have to change your braking system to accomodate it.
The diff from any Dana 44 will fit. It is the ring and pinion gears that will be different as I believe that your 73 is a low pinion, standard rotation, where the later F-150s (and I also believe the late 77-79 F-250s) Dana 44's are a high pinion, reverse rotation housing. So pick a diff and have at it, just make sure the axle shaft spline count is the same on the new diff. But then again, as Ted said, if it just ate the spiders, why not just buy new spiders and save the setup issue as you may have to shim the new diff, unless you want to switch out to a locker or some other traction control device.
I was pulling something to hard a couple years back and mine ate the spider gears also. I've heard that is one weak point of that front axle. I chose to pay a bit more, I think $200, and upgrade to a truetrac limited slip. The other weak point is the u-joints in the axle shafts. Replace them while youre in there.
all of the spider gears that i have found have costed more than a differental i wouldnt put a locker or limited slip in my front end my friend had one it only caused him trouble sometimes it would or wouldnt turn all the was he had limited slip and it wasent posi but it was hard turning i duno do you guys have any places that sell spider gears for a reasonable price? thanks justin
Mine is not any harder to turn. Do you have power steering? Is yours full time four wheel drive? If it is, definately do not get a locker. Also, terminalogy can be confusing--limited slip and posi is the same thing. Posi-traction is a chevy term for limited slip. Don't get a locker unless you are a serious off roader. Good luck, maybe find one someone is parting, I see two on craigslist in my state being parted out. That is cheaper, but used parts can be worn out parts.
mine does have power steering as long as the hubs aint locked in and its in 2wd the driveshaft dosent turn this is supposed to be my mud/mess around truck but im swappin motors in my diesel so now im driving it to school i will prolly just find another diff. and swap spider gears thanks for ya'lls help justin
