I cracked my drivers side exhaust manifold recently, and am looking to put some headers in. Got a few questions -
will mustang headers bolt on?
are painted steel headers junk? is it worth it to get porcelain / stainless steel ones?
whats the difference between regular headers and "shorty" headers?
and - anyone have any suggestions on a particularly good brand or has had a good / bad experience with any brand?
Just though i would throw my 2 cents in here. I got a set of factory shorty headers off a 91 mustang, and they bolt right on with no issues which made me happy. I had a set of flowtech full length headers but had to massage em into place. I'm alot happier with the shorty headers. Truck sounds good too.
I also have two cracked manifolds and thought about mustang headers. I looked at some pics of both designs and it seemed that the collector was in a different position, further forward on the bronco/f-150 design and closer to the firewall on the mustang. Did you fit them up to factory bronco Y-pipe? Any modifications? I think I might have a set of them from my mustang days as a kid, but they're 2000 miles away in dad's garage.
I don't know about the Mustang Headers question but I have been looking into getting a set myself because mine are rotting and look like *****. I was thumbing through Jegs the other day and Hedman makes a set that are good looking for only around $170. I will probably go with these when I can afford it. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.
Sorry about not mentioning a small fact. After installing the mustang shortys i had the entire exhaust done, since it was rusting away, and have several leaks due to several encouters with rocks.
The outlet is aimed more toward the firewall than the stock manifolds, but it worked since i redid everything.
If memory serves I bought Pacesetter Shorty's for an '87 and up 302 bronco because I was sick of the full length headers falling off. Then I was able to use a stock Y pipe/Cats/Cat-back to make the NYS DMV happy. Around $250 for the set, ceramic coated. Coating has held up well (3 years now) and is showing very little rust/damage. Headers came from JCWhitney I think. HTH.
they are sturdy with thick flanges and good welds....
the thermal barrier coated headers are the way to go IMHO this will help lower under the hood temps and facilitate better exhaust scavenging due to the thermal energy retention of the coating.
these are pricey but will fit right in.
I have a pair of these shorties on my 69 mustang and they look, work and sound great!!!
