Heating Problems

I have a 92" Ford F150, it has over 140,000+ miles on it, it will not heat up. I have checked the anti-freeze level and they are good. What's the problem?? I need some advice!! I think it might be the thermostat but not sure. Any advice!!

Clarify "it won't heat up". Do you get heat from the vents? Is the temp gauge sitting a cold? Does the motor run normally?

The temp gauge moves up the beginning line of the normal setting then as I drive it goes down, but not to far. I get some heat from vents but nothing like I use to get. The engine runs normal also, I haven't seen any changes in the gauges or heard any different noises from the engine. thanks for any help.

With this cold weather and my truck sitting outside for weeks at a time I had to bring my truck into the garage to get my heat to work. Feel your hoses running in and out of your heater core on the passanger side on the engine compartment. IIRC the outside line is the input, and the inside line is the return. My outside hose was hot, and the inside hose was ice cold. I had some blockage in the heater core, I didn't think I had the correct mixture on my antifreeze so I added some more. After heating up the garage and working on my brake issue (solved) I tried the heat and it worked fine. Both hoses were not hot and fluid was properly flowing through the heater core. If you do not have a way to heat the entire truck up, I'd suggest pulling reversing the flow to the heater core for a min or so (switch the hoses on the motor) and then put the hoses back to their normal position. Ford suggests backflushing the heater core when there is blockage. It sounds like it could have some frozen fluid in it, and that may fix it. If you think there is debris in it, backflush it with a hose so the expelled fluid is expunged from the system and not re-entered into the cooling system. Hope this helps, driving without heat sucks.

That's what I figured, but I figured I'd ask around to see if I get the same answer. How hard is it to replace and where is it located at so I have an general idea where to go too?

It it located in the elbow housing on the top front of the motor. Follow the top radiator hose and its inside of that where it meets the motor. Pull off the intake tubs, drain some fluid and remove the top hose. There are 2 bolts and a gasket to get to the thermostat. Remeber the position of the thermostat and replace with new, use black RTV for sealent. Dont forget to watch for leaks!
