I am working on getting an 87-91 ford F-150 4x2 to use for parts for my 89 F-150 4x4. There will still be a mostly complete truck left if this happens. The truck has a 302 with a dead computer in it now, what must be changed to install a 460, or is it even possible? I can get the engine cheap. The trans will have to be changed I'm sure(being fitted to a 302). I am going to stick with the automatic and will be using headers for exhaust.
Well, lets start with the non specific (EFI or carb) parts that will need to be found.
- Motor mounts, L&L products are the best ones to get (also have wonderful headers for all 460 swap applications)
- Rad, the 460 needs much more cooling than the little 302
-Accessory drives and or brackets. The alternator from the 302 should work in either the old style v-belt or new style serpentine belt application.
-Transmision obviously, the most available would be a c6 3spd auto which is not computer controlled.
If the 460 that you are looking at is efi then you will have to look at the truck is came out of for the specific parts that you will need. First off, the computer and wiring harness will need to be found, and make sure it is complete for ease of swap. Then you will need to know if the truck has the E4od in it, which I am sure that it would since I think the fuelly 460's and the E4od's came out at the same time. I am also certain that some one on here will correct me almost instantly if I am wrong about that. If it has the e4od then you will have issues if you install a different tranny than the e4od since the engine computer controls both engine and transmission. Hope that helps and good luck to you.
