Could anyone tell me where to find a high output alternator that is internally regualated as i believe my 5.0 Bronco's is. Or advise on changing it to an externally regulated alt. I run an electric plow and on a busy night the lights dim and the charge meter dips to a scarey level. Thank you all in advance.

I might be able to help you, I work in an electrical shop and rebuild alternators and starters, been doin it for a little over a year.
It usually depends on what generation alternator you have.
If there are two plugs that go into the alternator you have a 2G, and these are compleate crap compared to the other generations.
What I recomend is that you look into upgrading to a 130 Amp 3G ford alternater, It's a much better alternator and lasts longer too. A 3G will have one plug and one stud.

Hey, RoadKill

I have a '92 XLT 4.9L a/c and believe I have what you refer to as the 2G alternator. Will my wiring plug right into the 3G alternator? What do I look for, or ask for, to get the 3G alternator? Thanks.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-02 AT 08:29 AM (EST)]I ditto that question Roadkill. Also is the G3 internally regulated as the G2? If the G3 is 130amp...do you know what the G2 is?

Thank you Guys

Thank you all. I just check the Alt. it has two plugs plus the stud. One plug has one wire...the other has three wires. I called a auto parts store around my area and all they have for that is a 95 amp. I am hard pressed to believe that my alt is 95 amp. I was thinking around 40-60 the way the lights dim when i start operating the plow with the wipers, lights, defroster etc. I think it would maintain with a 95 amp...not great but better than i am getting.

Thanks again i will keep check and check out that web site as well.

It's not hard to re-wire for external regulation, and I think Brian Soderblom's site above details how. I think external is the way to go, much easier to replace the regulator if needed, and they're only like $15

The external would be the cheapest for me too. My dad has a 88 crown vic witht the 302 and a brand new not a rebuilt 130A alt. I will steal that before it gets towed away.

Thank you all very much I will do my research on that. After i get through tonights storm

To answer your question, yes the 3G is internally regulated, The 1g is pretty much the last generation that was externally regulated.
I'm not sure what amp you can get a 2g up too because I simply have not played with them enough and probly won't because there a pain to work on. Most cases where people are looking for more power from the alternator, we upgrade to a 3g cause the parts cost less and they are more reliable. Also, the other inquiry, about the lack of amps, you might look at your battery cables and make sure there not corroded or loose, cause a 95amp sounds like plenty of power but I also don't know how mush power your drawing. You can check for a 3g upgrade form an electric specialty shop in your area. Well, good luck with your plow.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-02 AT 09:08 PM (EST)]What timing!!!! I think my Alt. is going bad. When I turn on the headlights, radio, and heat I notice a big drop in amps on the gauge. All the way down to the N and maybe even a little more. So I am thinking pretty much my Alternator is bad. So my actual question is. I don't have extra lights, winch, etc., etc. so could I go ahead and install a larger alternator even though I am not pulling alot of amps.....yet!!!

OOOPS!! Sorry guys...... 95 EB Bronco 5.8L bone stock for now.... Ho Ho is coming soon.:-X12

I just picked up a 170 Amp alt off E-Bay to replace the 95 amp unit that just died(couldn't handle the stereo) in my 94. It was a direct bolt in. The only mod I had to make was to increase the wire size to handle the increased current.
If you go to the link that Aim posted and look at the new harness diagram that is what my 94 came with from the factory. I thought that 93 to 96 trucks with the 5.0 and 5.8 engines came with the G3 alt from the factory at 95 amps. The diesel engines came with the 130 amp version of the same alt.

Becuase of all the elctrical systems that I've already installed, like stereo, cd player, electric fan, electric air compressor, and keyless entery Module, and I am planning on adding a elecric winch and maybe a power inverter.
I have just odered a 225 amp dual output alternator from Powermaster. Not cheap, just over $400. I will be adding a second battery to handle the additional electrical equipement. This Alternator has internal regualors and isolators, setup for the dual batteries.

Hey Miketnf150
Yea you could go to a higher amp alternator. Probably a 140 amp would be fine. If you do plan on adding more electrical goodies to your rig try going bigger now for future use.

Hope this helps
