When I throw her in reverse the response is delayed by about 2 to 3 seconds.
And when she finally does decide to fall into reverse gear it's violant as all hell.
She'll fall back into drive ok.
Anyone tell me what's the cause.... Hope I don't need another one.
Friend of mind told me to drop the pan, replace the filter, refill with a quart of LUCAS trans tune-up?
I have a similar problem - I shift into reverse and it takes about a second for it to engage - if I don't wait before giving it the gas it will bark the rear tires.
I just changed my filter and fluid and added Dr. Tranny's shudder fix to help the shuddering but none of this changed the reverse delay.
I remember reading somewhere on this forum that the E4OD was designed to vary the shifting - when the accelerator is only slightly depressed, the tranny will shift slowly for smoothness. If you floor it, it will shift quickly to give the best acceleration.
Maybe something in this shift speed logic is crapped out. IMHO, I doubt this is an indicator of imminent catestrophic failure - mine has done it for years.
"E4OD delayed Reverse Application" this is a very know problem for this particular tranny model.
Ford did some modifications like a higher volume front pump to reduce that problem but if your are seen a progresive time increasing it also means there could be some internal seal leaks and/or oil pump wear.
Using tranny additives will help a bit with seal leaks. Perform a pressure test to obtain more info.
My 92 with the 302/E40D combo does this too. I just have to wait about a second for the tranny to shift into reverse from drive or drive from reverse. If I give it gas before it shifts it wants to spin once it does shift. I've gotten used to waiting...it really doesn't bother me anymore, so I'm not going to change tranny fluid until scheduled time or anything.

First chance, I plan to drop the pan and change fuild. Tranny has approx 150K
on it. should I pull the lines going to and from the cooler and blow them out?
My Brother in-law recommends Lucas tranny tune up.... does any one recommend a product? If I'm going to drop it, I want to use a good gasket and put it on right. Some say, not to use any permatex.... others say, use permatex on the pan side only or use a tack just to hold the gasket in place.
Would someone glear me up on this or am I making to much of something simple?
Look at the articles/specs, there is an article of how to change the oil of the E4OD, I have used it myself.
Some shift-kits makers states that the delayed reverse can be cured whith their product.
I own a very fine 96-150 5.8 E4OD 4x4, and wish there was a possible way to trick this tranny to shift earlier whithout spending 400-500 dollar on a tuner. This tranny has also delayed reverse, and I have heard that Ford made it this way.
The Reverse Drum is very big, it takes long to fill up when Reverse Gear is commanded. The 1996 E4OD has the high volume pump, it should not take more than 1 second to apply reverse.
