ok i found a deuce and a half near me for $800 my buddies dad will pay for half if he can have the PTO winches.
my question to y'all is can i use the transfer case out of it or would i be better to find an np205. also do they come stock with 6.17 gears. and also what kind of springs would i have to run with hthem. would i also need to rebuild them. and lastly off the top of y'alls head do ou know what stock shafts would cost.
as of right now what i would do is pinion brakes, because i will have no reason to drive it on the street. but if they are actually the rockwell style that KO is talking about i will buy them and set them aside so i can gather parts to put them in for next wheeling season/around august instilation.
KO is there any other way to tell the difference whether they are GM or rockwell. if i can get the year of the truck would it help dicifer what they are?
you can get stock axle very cheap, lot less then 400
depending on the condition you prob want to rebuild since they are takout, then you should get those monster drum brakes removed as well, unless you want to keep it drums,
you can run the transfer case from it, i know many of trucks running them, they are good because they are strong as h*ll and they have a big drop, which is nice depending on how much lift your runnin'
you can use any kind of spring you want, you just have to have the square u bolts if you run leafs, i have coils under mine.
gm axles look just like a gigantic 9" with the round rear pan.
you should also keep in mind in case that you do ever want to drive it on the street that it takes a lot of work/money to make them street legal, you have to narrow the front, and have brakes on all 4 wheels.
it would be a very good deal even if they are in poor condition.
i have been told by a few guys that build "pro"-mud trucks and monster trucks that the 2.5 t-case is really not strong enough to justify the weight it adds, therefore i was RECOMMENDED to run the 205 b/c it is a very stout unit. and this is from guys who run 5 tons like most of us run D44's...just a suggestion
Diddo, the rock tc is a heavy unit, if you can get a 205 for cheap (ie 100 bucks) then go that route, but if weight isn't a concern then use the rock case.
i appreciate yalls help, right now money is tight and i know i wouldnt be able to have the rocks under the truck until next season. and i know that the deuce and a half wont be going anywhere for a while so im holding off on getting it for a while, at leaste till i get a new tranny for my diesel. thanks once again for yalls help.
thats allright, i guess i will have to do without........i am buying my own rockwells tomorrow anyway, i just have to borrow a trailer to get them home!!

the best part about the deuce and a half that i found is its only a 1/4 mile away from were i store and work on my truck. so it would be so easy to just take the 450 tracloader up there and pull it to the shop/hay barn.
