If it's a '96, check the brake switch at the end of the master cylinder. According to the guy behind the parts counter, they commonly start leaking and stop working over time. This will indeed cause the cruise to not work, and fixed mine. I don't know if the '86 year has this switch or not.

It's just a redundant safety switch that opens & kills power to the cruise servo when the pressure is high. That's the electric servo cruise ('93-up), which is different from the vacuum servo cruise system.

OK. I found out that it's a 94 not 96. But it looks like this stuff applies to the 94 anyhow.
