Hello
I am looking at a 2001 F 250 to use as a tow Vehicle for my 67 Fairlane. The weight is about 5000 with the trailer. I currently got a 96 F 150 302 auto 355 rear and I use it but am finding it does the job but is a little small. I am wondering if this F250 I am looking at would be alot better than what I got and if they are a good long lasting truck. Also if anyone knows of any problems they may have.. Also is this About the right price. It does have the 5.4 only is that enough motor?
Here is the add in the local paper I have not been able to contact the owner yet... 2001 FORD F250 Super Duty XLT 4x4 Crew cab. 5.4L. 77,000 mi. $16,000; BO
My other option is to just keep my truck I only tow the car a couple times a year but sometimes 10 hours away.
i have had the same truck 250 5.4 auto but reg cab 4x4 for about six months i have pulled cars and a 4000 pound boat the mpg drops to 10 when loaded but pulls great i would like to improve the trans shifting but that is about it my 01 with 65000 was 13000
My '01 5.4L Reg Cab has 114,000 miles and is running as strong as ever. Had to replace upper and lower ball joints both sides at 103,000 miles. Great truck! IMHO $16000 sounds really high.
I tow a 24 foot enclosed car hauler with my truck (see signature). In the trailer you will usually find a 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix or a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville. Both are damn heavy cars.
I have no problems, the truck feels like she could pull 5000 more, although that would be overweight.
Your 2001 will not have as much power or be able to pull as much due to the transmission. I would skip that one if I were you and look for a PSD or V-10 of the 2001 vintage. A 5.4 will work, but get a later vintage with a torqueshift automatic.
Pass on that one and try to find a V-10 powered one. Price is way to high on the one your looking at. The 5.4 will get worse mileage then the v-10 and the 5.4 has to work alot harder unloaded as well.
I have an "01 F250 SC 4x4, 5.4 with 4.10 gears. I pull a 5000 lb empty (at least another thousand in supplies) travel trailer and it does just fine. The sweet spot is at about 65 mph. I think without the 4.10 gears I would not be as happy with the towing performance.
I wanna thank all of you for the replies. That is why I asked here first to see any possible problems. His price is high but in Illinois it seems like all trucks are high. I would like a bigger motor for sure but i may just see how low this guy will go. If it gets real cheap I will think about it but may just end up waiting.
Thanks again
You might be able to save a bit on the purchase price and fuel in the future by finding a 2WD version. If you only need it for towing a car, you could go witout the added weight (and potential maintainence).
I would have to agree with bbender85. I've got an '01 SC Lariat with 5.4 & 4.10's; I don't pull much of anything often, but the few times I have, I had no problems what so ever. Also, I personally feel that the 4.10 gears cause me to get better mpgs than guys with the 3.73s. I normally get between 15-17 on trips to WV and back. All that said though, $16K sounds a little high for that truck. I bought mine about a year and a half ago with 30K miles on it and paid $15.5K. Good luck!
My previous SD was a F250 SC V-8 with 4.10 gears. In my opinion and experience, that was an excellent truck and had more than adequate power. I've pulled with that truck and it was rock solid. My issue is that with a Crew Cab, I would go with the V10. In the regular or Supercab, the V-8 works.
