Heater and AC fill the truck with a fine mist fogging up the windows. The kids tell me it smells like Pancakes and Syrup. Oh and it does not heat or cool since this started. What the heck can it be?
Your heater core is shot. Time to replace it. This will require the dash board of your truck to be removed for the most part to gain access to the core to replace it. If you think that you are willing to tackle the job, here are instructions to help you out. Good luck!
yep its the heater core. hah good luck with that man, i just finished that project today.
my advice: be sure to wrap the heater core VERY WELL with foam tape or w/e u choose to wrap it with, and make sure it doesnt rattle around in there. i found out, after all was said and done, that the sumb*tch still rattles, so now im tryin to figure out a way to make it stop without havin to do the whole friggin dash removal again
If this is on the vehicle listed in your public profile...My guess is you won't be doing it yourself. But then you never did say what kind of vehicle this is on...Mmmm
I guess it could be on the '97 listed in other posts...But I am just not sure.

If you do a search for "heater core", you'll find that this is very common. The sweet smell is from the anti-freeze. Most folks seem to use an aftermarket heater core made by "Four Seasons" as the factory cores seem to fail just like the original one. One horror story is a guy that has gone thru something like 4 factory cores! See about replacing the plenum assembly as well when you do it. The plenum doors tend to crack/break due to becoming brittle with exposure to heat & cold along with age. One of the more experienced Ford technicians said he always does both the plenum and heater core together no matter which one caused it to be brought into the shop. About a $1,000 job if done by the dealer. Complete dash removal to get at the heater itself, followed by heater disassembly to replace the core. Might as well reassemble with new plenum/door assembly as well instead of the one that will fail if you don't.
I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday and last night coolant began leaking onto the Cat heat shield...not sure if these are related or if I'm just lucky enough to have 2 problems at once. I also have a 1997 F150 5.4L.
