Gonna put the 427 build in the UNI. The one in the 66. Would like ta know if I can use the Jag IFS on the 62 frame as the MII is to light. Need power steering and front disks. What do ya all suggest as it will be a daily driver. And funds are tight.
Frame should be the same from 1957 thru 1964. Some I know call a 52-56 an effie, so I'd say I don't know. But if you have the "stuff" to fab it what difference does it make?
I mean it's not a drop in/ Bolt up deal either way. You will have to fabricate to get it inthere no matter what you do, no?
Well the pictures I have seen posted here. Showing around a 50 F100 setting on a Jag IFS and it looked like all that needed done was line it up and drill some holes to bolt it in. I Don't know what a Volare front end is. Is it A factory Dodge or aftermarket?
Richard, We really try to limit all answers to Ford truck parts here if we can. We know some folks want to put brand X parts on their trucks, and for the most part they look elsewhere for those answers.
I know we are a little hard nosed about it, but what can I say?
Ya John I agree to the point that I will keep the straight axle and upgrade to power disk. This way It's all ford parts and she will be happier I think. So lets start with a hydro-vac and a duel reservoir from a later model. Any suggestions? Already looking for an era power steering from a bigger truck or a car that will work with little or no mods. Thanks again John for stopping me from unfordifying my ford.
When we are done the new pic's will have either the stock steering column or a tilt T-bird in It. The GM one is being removed as we speak. And looking for a Ford power unit. The front disk will wait till after the power assist is in. As my little brother is a safe driver he is young enough to have forgotten how to drive manual drum brakes and is overheating them and not feeling comfortable driving the mountain roads in Western Colorado where she is at this time. Now I see this as a good thing. Although he can drive her whenever he wants. The less he dose the better I like it. He whats to drive her up and back this summer and do the work here. But he will be out fishing and I will be in the shop. So as soon as I get the Doc's ta release me. I will take the 390/427 out of the 66 and go there as he has a nicer shop and a lot better selection of parts than I do on an Island in Alaska. Wow even I had to take a breath reading that long sentence. Let me know what ya think of the plan John and what to look at for the power assist parts at the pick a part yards. The Booster and master will be new and the steering box I will overhaul. I don't want him calling me again and saying that after coming down a long hill,. Accelerating on the straights and braking hard in the turn than getting to the bottom in town and have over heated the brakes to the point of not being able to stop at the light at the bottom. I reminded him that it was not his 04 ranger and can't be drove like that. So I got ta fix it so he can as we will be adding several hundred more pony's with the engine from the 66. Which will get UNI's engine. Dose this meet my sig a little better?
Arctic there isn't a bolt in deal for the power steering unless you go with a power ram setup. However you can do a 80's toyota power steering box with an aftermarket bracket. There are quit a few articles covering the swap if you google it. The hydro-vac brake system has been around since the mid 70's. I had one in the donor 76 lincoln continental I bought for the 460. I didn't have the time then to pull it out for my truck since I was on a deadline to get my truck put back together to move to CA from LA. So you can find the units in some junkyards or you can pull one from a 2001 and newer Mustang as well. This info should be helpful since I too prefer to rebuild stuff then buy a kit.
You might want to look into rear disk too. Depending on which 9inch is in the truck you might be able to use explore rear disk set ups. I would do a search or look at curries web site. good luck and keep us updated.
Why can't (with some mods) use the column, shaft and box off a 62-64 era Galaxy or Bird. There is A truck pump that I have seen with the coils wrapped around the reservoir. This like a 2 ton. And any early FE pump on a car or truck should bolt to my FE. Won't it? And if you are talking about the Ford Bendix or Garrison power ram that is a nightmare if it messes up. Toyota is out as It will stay Ford or aftermarket Ford specific like the rotors and calipers. Your info is very helpful and well appreciated.
Thank you and please keep the suggestions coming.
Well I looked up the Galaxy and T-Bird power steering for the years you mentioned and they are the ram style. I did do some ebaying to look at different pictures of ford power steering box's. If you make a bracket you can mount a 80-96 f-150 box upside down and make it work. However there might be some clearance issuses with the input shaft. I don't have one in hand so I can't measure it to be sure but it is a starting point using common ford parts.
Airharly by ram steering are we talking about a Bendix or Garrison used on ford tucks in the mid to early 70's. as in having 4 hoses running from the box to the ram. Or something different. Any body got a pitcher or link to the early to mid 60's Galaxie power steering. Frond end
The hydralic steering ram I am refering to is on this link. Very similiar to what I found searching for the galaxy, t-bird, and early mustang. I wasn't able to find an actual power steering box so I am assuming that there wasn't one available until later.
