I have a major problem going on with my 84 Bronco XLT. I am running out of time get my truck inspected. I bought it out of state where there are no emmission requirements. After taking the test the first time everything passed except for the CO. Thinking that the o2 would be simple to replace, I was extremly wrong! The damn thing is in a very tight space and when I finally got to it and broke the seal, the nut became stripped. I have had three different machanics try to get it out but no luck.
So my question is...Does anybody have any tricks to get a stripped o2 sensor out?
Have you tried removing it while its hot? Sometimes bringing the componenets to op. temp. will allow for easier removal. There are obviously precautions to be taken and never try to remove with the engine running. And by all means, when you do get this problem corrected, be certain to install the new one with plenty of anti-seize on the threads of both the sensor and the mounting hole. take care not to get any of it on the tip of the sensor itself though.
The last couple of times that I have tried to remove it the engine was still hot, especially the manifold. I looked around for one of those sockets that has the pins inside of it for stripped nuts, but the biggest they will get are 3/4". Any other suggestions out there???
propane torch ... heat the exhaust tube and nut, then spray with wd-40 or liquid wrench (these will work without igniting, but take precautions just the same) you'll probably have to use vise grips on it now, or try one of those nutsplitters and get it just tight enough to hold but not split. just some ideas that have worked for me over the years.
