Looked at a aviator 2003 on the internet through a dealer and it said premium fuel. do you have to use premium or would mid or regular work. it has the 4.6 v8.
If you're in a bind yes you can use regular, but this will hinder performance and long term use can cause damage, as the engine is "tuned" for premium use.
Use of regular will cause pinging and poor performance.
The Aviator has a Hight Output 4.6L V8, that requires premium as per what MazdaRangerGuyInSTL stated. An Explorer with the base 4.6L V8 runs on regular. When in doubt read the manual and follow it.
most of the time around here 90 octane is the cheapest and about 30 cents a gallon cheaper.
Would 1 or 2 octane really affect it that much?
On my jet ski it say to use premium but i have always used what is cheapest and the only difference i have found was on 87 it ran 7800 rpms WOT on 90 it ran 8200 rpm WOT and 91 it ran 8300 rpm WOT. so that is why i was asking about the use of premium. The dealer that had on said that they never put premium in just what ever is the cheapest.
I don't want to assume too much, but my guess is, the reason it's a question for this poster is the price difference (multiplied by the low gas mileage of SUVs).
Having said that, the basic rule of thumb (KISS) is to follow the manual.
There most likely is a technical reason for this requirement (if they were just doing it to cover there a$$es, they would have it for all vehicles). I know that when I bought my Echo leaf blower (high-end model), the dealer (and manual) told me never put anything but high-test gas in it, something to do with protecting the valves (I don't recall the details, if he really even got that detailed). Granted, the thing sips gas so it's not like filling an SUV, but I wouldn't want to pay to have that motor rebuilt, or to replace the whole thing because I did something preventable.
