I have '97 F-150 w/v6 engine(4.2)Truck has always cranked right up and ran good. After a recent cold snap truck refuses to crank.week ago experienced same thing as it was cold and truck spit and sputtered for a couple of minutes and cleared up.Now it will only turn over and occasionally "hits" w/o ever cranking.Any ideas?..Thanks
Sounds like an ECT problem (engine coolant temp sensor). Probably not reading low enough for the temp and enriching fuel mixture. Scan data should show this if you have access.
Chris:Well just got thru changing temp sensor and still same ole problem.Gonna pull loose fuel filter underneath truck tomorrow and make sure the pump is working inside tank.Should it pump just by turning on switch or do i need to turn engine over..Thanks...Dave
Did you ever solve the problem? If so, please tell!
I have a 97 4.2 F150 SC (57,500) with similar symptoms. I have had the occasional split-second rough start for as long as I've owned the truck, but lately it doesn't want to start unless I crank it several times. Warm or cold makes no difference, and it seems to be getting progressively worse. I don't trust the truck right now, so I won't take it anywhere until it's right. Thanks.

I have a 1997 4x4 Off Road W/5.4 liter engine, I have found that Splurging for a high octane fuel once a month has helped the Rough running/Starting problems I started to experiencing.
Consider using (HEAT) (DRY GAS) also. In addition if you have not changed your fuel filter since you have owned your truck consider changing it also. You did not state your mileage and I presume that you have met all the maintenance schedules and have no underlying problems.
