you know an engine doesnt need backpressure right? It needs a scavenging effect.....
A scavenging effect is how well the exhaust system sucks out the exhaust from the engine. The bigger your pipes are, the more air can move out, HOWEVER, since there is more area in the pipe, the air moves at a slower rate, which in turn decreases the scavenging effect by not creating as strong a vacuum of gases coming out of the combustion chamber.
Backpressure is what happens when air hits a baffle or other obstruction, causing a turbulence that can wrap around and actually go opposite the flow of the exhaust, so you have to use more of the engine's power just to push the exhaust out.
So dual 3 inch off the headers is okay? I do have a 1997 fuel injection motor, and your saying because it has fuel injection and a computer that it will realize the extra air its ****ting out, hence, she wil be able to bring more air in, and then be able to dump more fuel because theres more air to mix with her. And backpressure is no problem, now wont I be getting horrible gas mileage now? I dont care, noise and performance over the cost of gas any day. After all that, getting the throttle body spacer and then the chip!
Dual 3" pipes are too big. Dual 2.25 would be best, or a single 2.5-3". If anything, gas mileage will go up. Too big of pipe will kill your low end torque, too small of pipe will kill your top end.
I was looking at getting 5" tips, but I can't find a 2.5" to 4" reducer to make it work. The smallest 5" tip inlet I can find is 4". Anyone know where to get 5" tips with a 2.5" inlet or is it just not worth it? I can get the 4" ones without an issue.
Hmm, Okay, I think the 2 1/2 is what i will do then, for meatier accelleration and noise, I think it will be perfect, cant wait. I will post a video of the truck when shes all done.
I have a set of 30 series on my truck with a 302 its a one chamber muffler its loud but I want louder so I went with the super 40 from flowmaster and couldnt be happier it a whole different sound its low tone is what I like and with a mild cam my truck sound mean its a 1988 ford with a 302 carburated headers and dual exhaust go to flowmaster .com and listen to it your self.
yes a true dual 2 1/2" will be perfect. no loss of torque and frees up your exhaust. don't forget a cold air intake.you have to open up both ends. engine needs to breath on both ends.

i think a tip from 2 1/2" to 5" is a little extreme, especially if it is 14" long.sounds like something a diesel truck would have. i don't think it will sound right. try to find a 3 1/2" or 4" about 10 -12" plenty of resonance. don't worry about the tip as much. think more about the other components.
Thanks Lost Pride. I drove be aChevy gasser yesterday with what I would say would be a 5.5" tip and it sounded like crap (and that is not just because it is a Chevy). I think I'll go with a 4", that'll be plenty. I just want it to look at good as it sounds. so here is the final: 3" in Flowmaster Origional 40, dual 2.5" out to dual 4" stanless tips. I don't think I'm going with a free flow cat.
are you going to do a true dual or split after muffler? it does make a difference.
if you split at muffler go 3" out. i was under the impression that you were going true duals. let me know.
Hmm, this thread getting a tad confusing, we got a little dinner table cross conversation going on here, so sorry to interupt. yeah I have the Cold air intake right now, so hopefully by the end of next week, we will be in style depending on how fas SummitRacing sends there stuff out.

I am going to split at the muffler. I'm not going to do true duals.
