I did some research on this. The origional 40 is the loudest muffler FM makes. The 30 series is actually a race muffler that is used to quiet a car down for decibel rules. They make a 10 series as well that is even quieter.
The origional 40 series is NOT the loudest they make. The 10 series race muffler will be much louder. They are made to quiet down an open header race car. As well...a 30 series race muffler will be louder than their standard 30-series muffler.
the 10 series single chambers are alot louder than the 40 series. http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/race.html look where it says reduction over open headers the outlaw is the loudest and the 10 series is right under that. plus the 10 series have alot better tone than the 40 series which is kind of scratchy.
OK, so I must have been (might still be) confused. Does anybody have or have had a 10 series or outlaw? I might consider that for the V10, but I am still leaning towards the 40.
i have a goerlich single chamber (a flowmaster 10 series with out the name) on my 76 and they sound really good. i tried to find people that had them before i bought them but nobody ever said anything so i just went ahead with it and i am happy i did.
Goerlich's are some awesome mufflers. I love them. My friend has a couple on his built Chebby. 3" true duals from the headers back....no cats, and that thing is the loudest truck I have ever heard on the road. The day he got them installed, he came by to let me hear them. That's one of the only times I have ever needed to plug my ears!
Now my search for a good muffler is even wider than ever. Those Goerlich's sound like they would be good for me. I just would hate to end up with a ricey sound and switch them back out.
I'm still trying to decide what to do here. I have narrowed it down to the Flowmaster origional 40, Flowmaster 10, and the Goerlichs. What'll sound the bets on my V10 crew cab? I am going SI/SO, 3.5" or 4" pipe behind the muffer, and a 24" long 4" or 5" tip at 45 degrees behind the rear tire. I want a good loud tone. I am leaning towards the 10 series, but I am still up in the air.
