This is my first post, so be easy with me! Bought my first PSD last year and have been "educating" myself through this great forum. Now I need some help.
When I select 4WD on my 2000 SuperDuty and start to drive, I hear a squeak coming from somewhere around the front hubs. It usually goes away after a few miles. Dealer said something about an inner seal being dry and causing the squeak, but they want $350 to replace the seals. Anybody familiar with this, or have any other ideas?
If the inner seal your dealer is referring to is the one on the back of the hub, it is the same one that seals things off for the vac operated 4x4 ESOF. It doesn't make sense to me that a rubber seal would cause a squeek noise. Just a dumb question but have you checked your brake pads? you could be into the wear indicator. Stay tuned someone else will chime in I'm sure.
There are needle bearings on the axle shaft that need routine maintenance. Check out Guzzles site for the procedure. Search Guzzle92 in this forum. you will find all you need to know.
Thanks for the replies guys. This forum is great! As for the brake pad idea, there is plenty of pad left. The truck only has 40k miles on it, so I wouldn't think bearings or seals would be going bad so soon. The U-joint might be an idea. The squeak only occurs when driving slow in 4WD, but sounds like it's coming from the area around the hubs. As soon as I go back into 2WD, it stops. It also seems to go away if when I speed up in 4WD. Weird!
I jacked up the front of the truck the other day and turned the tires by hand while in 4WD (hubs locked and electric switch on 4wd).....and I couldn't get it to squeak. I then sprayed a little bit of Tri-Flow in toward the seals in the back of the hubs and took it out for a test drive. So far, no squeak, but I've only driven in 4wd a couple of times since then.
