Steering wheel concern

Hi guys,

Like many, my steering wheel has small cracks at the base of 2 of 3 spokes, where they attach to the center hub. Should I be concerned about the structural integrity of the steering wheel ?

Not sure if there's a steel core inside those ribs or not ?

Thanks.

Yes, there is a solid steel core inside the wheel.

Steering wheel repair kits are available, or you can mix up some model paint as close to the factory color of the wheel, then add some clear epoxy into the paint and fill in the cracks.

When dry, carefully sand off any high spots. Then using a little cleaner wax, buff the spots.

Once done, it's hard to tell the wheel was ever cracked.

Mine was cracked on all three spoke at the center and on the outer edge. It servied a roll over. So I wouldn't be to worried. I later replaced mine with a real nice wooden one. But like numberdummy said you can get repair kits for them.

I use a plumbers product call propoxy 20; It comes in a tube like playdough, its initially two colors black & white, I cut of a piece and knead it and then I spread it into the cracks of my steering wheel, once it hardened; I then lighty sanded too a smooth finish; then I painted my entire wheel with a fusion spray paint. I then wrapped the outer ring with a vinyl wheel wrap from a auto parts supplier.
Look in my gallery; even though the pictures are not to close to the wheel ;but the average car guy couldn't tell that it was ever cracked.

Repaired steering wheel on 65 and pleased w/ results. As noted, Eastwood has a kit for restoring the wheel. Most important, if you go to their 'tech library' there is a brief description on 'how to'. I used aerosol can of the 'fusion' type paint, color of choice, instead of the dye and clear coat. Not sure if it's possible to use clear over the fusion paint for results to last. I restored wheel several years ago and still looking good. If should to decide to give it a try, suggest not get carried away w/ applying the putty, particularly the grooves in the steering wheel design. Found it time consuming sanding the indentations of the grooves once putty sets up, so would wipe excess before it sets.
