Dont torch me on this one but here I go. I have never added any fuel additives to my fuel at fillups. I have often considered a fuel injection cleaner but have never done it. I have noticed a ton of posts about Diesel Klean ( DK ). I am obviously missing out (or am I?). What additives should I consider using and why? My 2000 F-250 is stock. Any suggestions?
There many things to consider. How cold does it get where you are, the year of your truck and wether in needs an upper cylinder lubricant running on the ultra low sulphur diesel and of course, injector cleaner. Cetane rating and anti-gel is important for cold starting and running. Most cetane boosters claim anywhere from 3 to 7 points. Diesel mechanics that I have talked to have told me that if your engine wasn't designed specifically to run on the ultra low sulphur diesel, you had better be adding something to your fuel that will compensate for it. Anti-gell is also important in cold climates or if you're heading into the cold on a trip. My Dad is a farmer and here in Ky he has never added anything to his fuel for his tractors even after my brother and I have been on him about it. Last week he bought enough PowerService for 300 gallon of diesel fuel. Saturday morning it was 5 degrees and after plugging in the heater for 30 minutes, his 2440 John Deere started right away and idled smooth. He said it never does that in the cold. He's now sold!
I just put some DK in my tank yesterday. It got down to -12 degrees here last night. When I started her up this morning, it seemed to be much quieter than without DK. Seems to me like the truck isn't having such a hard time with the cold weather. I recomend it.
Well, let me give you info on the truck and it's climate:
2000 F-250 7.3 PS
No mods to the truck (that I know of)
East Tennessee Climate (Cold winters are about 10 to 20 degrees at worst)
104,000 miles
I am not using the fuel that is required for 2007 model vehicles however I believe the sulfer content may be lower than when the truck was produced.
Where are you getting you diesel? Up here in Ky the only thing available is the ULSD. According to the guy from Shell that delivered my heating oil, it's going to be used in all diesel applications. He told me that the only difference between what you buy at the pump and what he was putting in my furnace tank is the dye. All ULSD.
The only place here that doesnt have the ultra low is Murphys. They post a sign about not putting it in 2007 or later models due to the ultra low requirement. That has been one of the few places I found it.
