Headers recommendation

I am looking to put a set of headers on a 1993 F-150 with a 5.0L motor. It is not a daily driver; it is a weekend hunting and outdoors truck. I am looking to boost my power and just to make the engine run better/more effiicently. Any recommendations?

I am leaning toward a set of Pacesetter shortys with Jet-Coat on them. Are shortys better or worse than regulars? What is the real difference between the two? Any other brand I should consider? Should I plan on putting a dual exhaust system to or will the single handle it ok?

Any and all input is appreciated.

Stay with the shorties. They will help you with low to mid-range power increases. Full length headers will hurt your low speed torque. Unless you plan to do burn-outs while chasing deer through the woods, I would stick with the short ones. I installed a set of shorties from Summit several years ago and the increase in low to mid range was noticeable. Have fun !!

That's completely backwords. Shorties will help midrange power mainly, while longtubes boost low rpm and high rpm more. But shorties will often bolt up to the existing Y pipe so installation is easier. A single 2.5" exhaust will produce the best low rpm torque boost on a 5.0, the stock truck motor doesn't flow anywhere near enough air to really take advantage of a big dual system. A free flowing exhaust will boost power and should return better milage over stock if it's not floored all the time, but too much exhaust usually results in a loss of low rpm power and fuel milage.

Excellent! Before you place the order, ask one of the techies at some place like Summit or Jegs and see what they would recommend. Tell them how you plan on using your truck and they will tell you what will work best for you. Good Luck to you.

shorties are more for mid to high end horsepower increase, and the long tubes will give you low end torque. most people go with shorties for space and ease of installation, plus most of the time they can bolt up to factory downpipes. if you have the room and plan on rerunning the exhause anyway the the long tube headers will give you more of what you are looking for. i've run hedman's before, and i plan on putting a clifford on my 300, whatever brand you buy the coating is worth the money. i've put 1500 degree paint on my headers before and it still burned off after a few days. just make sure you specify when you order sometimes you will have different headers for 2wd and 4wd. go with true dual exhaust just make sure you put an H or X crossover pipe in there to ballance out the left and right banks.

like conanski said, you also want to consider the size of the exhause pipes. if you run a single exhaust 2.5in would probably be good, and if you run duals bring that down to 2 1/4 or 2 1/8 in pipes. biggest mistake some people make is putting huge diameter pipes on a stock motor. you have to maintain some amount of backpressure and if you go too big on the pipes you will actually lose power.

I have Edelbrock shorties on my 302. I bought the ones with the Tri-Tech coating on them and they are holding up really well. My seat of the pants dyno tells me there is an improvement in power, fuel economy has not suffered at all although I can't really say there has been a noticeable improvement. The install was very easy, the hardware all fit perfectly and nine months later no leaks of any kind. I am running a single 3" exhaust.

Cheers!

Mike
