I want to convert my 1984 F350 351W 4WD from manual to auto. Can anyone recommend the best transmission, what mods I need to make, etc. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
4x4 c6, transfercase adapter for your case. this is a plentiful tranny and rebuild is cheap for it. you will also need the auto flywheel for a 302/351w it is a 50 oz imbalance i think ford started useing them in 80 or 81 not sure. im sure someone will correct me on the year. also tourqe converter and i would go with a little above stall like 1500.

Besides the tranny you will probably want the steering column for an auto tranny(for the linkage) and the radiator from a truck with an auto tranny (for the tranny cooler) oh and a carb from an auto truck (need the kickdown-passing gear linkage) and maybe the drive shafts because of length differances. hope that helps
you could keep your old radiator but you would have to use an after market tranny cooler. i am running straight from my after maket cooler and the tranny does just fine. just get a big one. and as far as the drive shafts i would have to say they should still work. i had a 6.9 diesel with a manual trans in my 86 f250 i put a 400 c6 7inch tail shaft 4x4 and used the same drive shafts. the only thing i know i have come across from this is coming close to the max point on the rear shaft. right now im fine but when i go to lift her i will have to get a longer shaft. as far as flywheel 302/351w from 84 and up used the 50oz counter wieght.83 and earlier used the 28oz
c-6 is definately the toughest, but you won't have an overdrive. which if you tow a lot doesn't matter anyway. aftermarket tranny cooler and don't worry about the radiator, get a good sized one rated for towing and tranny will stay plenty cool. you can also go with a floor shifter instead of replacing steering column, you've already got hole in the floor go ahead and use it, or replace column and find center hump out of 4x4 with automatic and you won't have to worry about making a plate to cover hole from stickshift.
