i was wondering if you guys have any insight on the better truck between the 78 and 79 bronco. no i know in the 78 you can put the 400 due to some increases in mandatory weights or whatever in 79. and the difference between the headlights except for the rangers. but does anyone know of anything else?
For the most part the main differences were emission related. The 78 had very little emissions stuff (like no cats). Like you said about the headlights for the most part they were round in 78 unless you got the XLT. I am sure that there is more differences, somebody here will let you know.
the 78 broncos had smaller u-joints, I think they are 1310's, 79 used the larger 3/4 ton style, I think 1330's, I'm not 100% sure on the size, but 79 was bigger.
you are correct, the second gen '78 bronco used 1310 series 1/2 ton u-joints .. in 79 these were upgraded to 1330 series, same as the 3/4 tons. the 1330 series continued to be used until ?? but both my 81 and 84 had 1330 series u-joints, and I'm pretty sure they used them up until 96 when the bronco was discontinued (maybe check with the later model owners on this though)

79 250 Ranger Lariat 4wd 400 C6 3.55's 33x12.50 16.5's
78 Bronco Custom 4wd 400 C-6 3.50's 31 10.5 15's
66 Mustang Coupe Sports sprint 200 c-4 cruise o matic 3.00's
99 Grand Prix GT 230 ft/lbs torque out of a non turbo'd 6 cyl hehe
Ignition key on 78 in dashboard, 79's in steering colum i believe the 78 was the last one that ran on regular gas as in leaded didn't have that stupic small gas filler opening and those foolish unleaded only on the dash panel.
