New guy here and needing Help

I have a 86 f150 I-6 that just quit and wouldn't restart as I was pulling it out of the driveway.

I don't believe it is getting any spark. My son held his hand on the coil as I turned it over. It didn't shock him so I'm assuming it something electrical.

Also poured some gas into the carb not even sputter. I've been told to check the ignition module but can not find anything that even remotely looks like one.

Any leads on what to look for next would be great.

Thanks in advance

Glen

Another way to check for spark is to remove a spark plug, reconnect the wire and ground out the plug while some is trying to sart the engine...position it so you can see the electrodes.

Have you pulled the plugs to see what they look like. I had a little 84 Ranger and all of a sudden it would barely run. Pulled the plugs and they were extremely fouled up.

Another test is to try and spray some starting fluid down the carburetor...be careful and don't use too much...and see if it tries to run on the starting fluid.

When was the last time you gave it a tune up with new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor?

Sounds to me like it could be the Ignition Module. if so, replace the pickup coil in the dizzy. The module is located on the left fender inner apron, the pickup coil is in the dizzy.

You shouldnt use your body to test anything electrical.

The coil has enough amperage and voltage and the potential of killing or hurting you.

Remember it's not the voltage as much as the amperage that can hurt you bad.

BTW, I agree with Bill, "NumberDummy" It's most likely the ignition module.

Welcome to the site

18,000 volts from the secondary ciruit of the coil and people are Holding on to them :confusing:

Check my 80's Truck album in my gallery (click my user name for access) for the instructions of testing you Ignition Modulator

Get yourself a Multi-meter for testing electrical circuits

also, Please put the actual topic in the title.

ie: No Ignition Spark

It helps us know what the thread is about and aids other users with searching.

Alright as I said above I have looked all over the left inner fender and fire wall and underneath the dash and have found nothing that resembles an Ignition module.

I found pictures of two differnt types on the net and even bought one from the parts store. Just to make sure what I was looking for. I don't believe this truck has a typical Ignition module.

I put a cap and rotor on last night. Nothing. The truck was running just fine. No sputtering No lack of power or bogging. But it just quit as I was waiting for a car to pass and pull out of the drive way. I wasn't ******* it or anything.

I will try replacing the pick up coil. How deep is it in the distributer?

Thanks again Glen

well... to remove the connector you need to push back the locking strap.
Take a small screwdriver and lift the strap and pull the plug.

Note: you may just have corrosion build-up on the terminals of that connector.
It happens all the time with my Lincoln.
Just pull it out of the dist... clean the contacts and push it back in ..then try it

You have a TFI-1V ignition system.

The ignition module is located on the side of the distributor. Factory ones have motorcraft stamped onto it.

It is held onto the distributor with two TORX headed screws.

If you dont have a set of TORX bits or drivers, it is wise to invest in a set. There are quite a lot of parts held on with these type screw heads on these trucks.

That black thing in the picture is the module. I don't know about a 86 6 cylinder, but a 86 302 would be fuel injected, and the module would hang on the side of thedist like your picture above.

It has two bolts in the side that take it off. The problem is, most standard sockets won't fit. You can buy a special socket, or take a regular socket(I can't exactly remember the size, it might be 7mm) and grind the outside of the socket till it fits.

OK I feel stupid now!!!! I thought mine was cast into the distributer. Its the same color and the way they have it mounted makes it look like one piece that wouldn't seperate. I'll get it pulled off and checked tommrow.

Thanks Guys

locomotive,

Would it be possible to take a pic or two of your system and post them? They're worth 1,000 words you know.

Ok got it running. It was the module. I ground down a 7 and then a 6.5 mm neither would work then a friend showed up and said that he has done one before and still had the socket in his tote around tool box. It was a 7/32.

Sure thought it would be a Metric and not a standard.

Sorry Ken's 80 no pictures. But it does look like the one I posted a link to except the module was a greenish gray and the distributer had faded with some corrosion. Throw in a little dirt and oil and it looked like one unit. That and the fact I don't like to wear my glasses corn fused me .

Thanks guys for the help!!!!!

Glen

P.S. Does any one know some one who rebuilds Ford Carbs Near Wash D.C.? I might want to get this one done
