Hello all, I attempted to take my gas tank off today, and the bolts came off about half way and stripped, i can't get them off now, the tank has leaked out all of the gas, and now is full of fumes, do you guys have any suggestions on how to get the tank off, the iowa road salt is harsh on these things!!! Let me know!!!
If you lose the rear bumper, you'll have good access to the nuts to crack them or grind them off, but considering the leak and the possiblity of an empty tank exploding, I'd stick to something that doesn't produce heat or sparks. You could dry the tank by pulling the filler hose from the wheelwell and stuffing a vacuum cleaner hose set to blow in the tank for several hours, and then (as long as it doesn't still smell like gas) it should be safe to grind near. Remember you're gonna have to buy some new nuts & bolts, and you'll probably want them all to be the same, so get 8 sets. Anti-seize lube will prevent any future problems.
Hey all....I am just gonna get back to you with the removal and this wonderful tool i used, It was an Air hammer, most of you may have heard of this but i would just like to inform you guys of this, i just cut around the bolts, the tool cuts really good, and then when i got the tank out of there i was able to grind the bolts without the worries of being blown to bits but i thought i would let you all know, and tell you guys that don't know about this tool how great it is!!!!
