Hey guys, I just bought a 1979 ford 4x4 swb auto tranny. The old truck is in pretty good shape except for a pecking noise in the motor. It has a 460ci big block in it and it seems to run pretty stout. It doesn't smoke or leak any oil.It also has good oil pressure. The noise comes and goes while excelerating. Its pretty much constant at idle speed. It sounds like its coming from the top of the motor center/left side(its hard to tell which side).I was just wandering if anyone had any ideas what it might be.Thanks alot ccrabtree

Are you meaning you can hear it at idle, with the hood up by chance, and its somewhat to the left side, center, as in looking at the engine from the front?
If so, an aggravation that I found on the stock 4bbl intake that used the Holley's (trucks and vans), the EGR spacer plate gasket would burn through. I have heard them range from just a ticking sound to a full out exhaust leak sound.
It would create an exhaust leak on the left side, center, under the carb. I also found that buying an OEM Motorcraft replacement was the only way to go. It would burn out Fel-Pro's and such in no time.
I can't see or hear your vehicle. I'm not saying this is your issue, just throwing it out to you for something else to check.
Thanks alot for the advice but I just put a new aluminum intake and holley 4bbl on the motor with all new gaskets and it still makes the noise. I also put new lifters in when I replaced the intake but that didn't seem to work either. I wish I would have replaced the rockers and pushrods while I had it tore apart but I was almost sure the new lifters would work.Oh well, back to the drawing board! I appreciate the help
Thanks ccrabtree
Silly question, but did you trhow a timing light on it to verify timing? Mine was off after a manifold install and the spark nocking on the big block sounds very different from my 5.0's! It sounds and acts very similar to what you are describing.
No I haven't put the light on it I thought I had it close just by ear but I'll take your advice and put the light on it right away thanks alot ccrabtree.
Sounds a lot like my 78 460 when It had a broken piston skirt. Over time it got worse. I started pulling plug wires while it was running and once I took the load off that cyclender, the noise went away. Pulled the pan and found a peice of the skirt had broken off.
