I have 2001 e350 5.4, once in a while when I start it up it will stall. Like it is not getting enough gas. When I take my foot off the brake and try to go - it stalls. I have to give it gas while my other foot is on the brake. After a few minutes of driving everything is back to normal. This only happens when it is wet out. Any ideas?
Mine did this when it had 96,000 miles on it, so I had the plugs changed, solved the problem, a few years later it did it again, but would not start back up no matter how many times I tried, I replaced the IAC and it corrected it. The IAC was $60, tune up was $315, so depending on miles, I'd start with the IAC (idle air control) first, but plugs are only good for 100,000 miles.
Due to a poor design, one of the COPs has a problem with water leaking on it. I have a 5.8, and no experience with this engine. I have seen a lot of posts on this subject. If no one chimes in on this, go to the 5.4 forum...alot of talk about it over there.
The COP will throw a code, check engine light comes on, when you get a code scanner, it'll tell you which one, they are stored, the IAC or fouled plugs thrown no codes. You can take it to Auto Zone for a free scan, but I've found the cheap handhelds don't get them all, dealer charges about $100 for a better detailed one.
Before I started anything I checked the codes - no codes. Was having problems keeping the van running this morning, kept stalling out. I changed the air filter and cleaned the MAF for starters, that made no difference. Next I cleaned the IAC and bolted it back on. The van was stalling worst than before until I noticed that I forgot to plug the IAC back in. Now it starts right up agian. Thanks all for the help. While I had the engine cover off I tried to find the egr valve to clean it. I have a shop manual I still can't find the valve - if someone could post a pic to help me locate it..... I still have one problem an intermitant stutter (when I get to around 55 mph). I had this problem before and the dealer said it was one of cop and had it replaced problem went away but now its back off and on. Hasn't done it for about a month. Hopefully next time it happens it will throw a code.
EGR is on the drivers side, follow the steel pipe up and you'll find it, I say it's too much of a pain to clean, if it causes a problem, just replace it. Buy another IAC, it'll not last, I know someone who got tired of having to keep cleaning his, at least you know it was the problem, and how to get at it. You may want to look into replacing the PCV next time the dog house is off, it may be due.
