so i have a full size e250 superextended van with the 5.4l. lately it has been sputtering, and i have codes for cyilnder misfires in about three cylinders. this has happened before in one cylinder, where i replaced the coil over plug on one of the cylinders. i was told they fail at higher mileages, now having 168,000 miles on it. van is a 99.
so my question is, i was probably gonna replace all of the coils this time, 8 of them, but 7 since i replaced one of them about 10k ago.
is there an easy way to get at all of them? or a procedure, because it looks like some of the plugs are not going to be easy to get out. i removed the hatch in the interior of the van, and was looking at it.
i figured the coil packs would need to be removed on routine tuneups anyway, when replacing the spark plugs. any help would be appreciated. thanks guys.
I've had mine open, closed it in disgust, no way I'd try it, too much of a chance to damage an injector, none of the engine seems to be accessible. I find it sad that the boots have only been availible with the coil packs until last year, I believe you should replace them with the plugs, to keep from having a failure.
its actually not that bad. you can access the back four from the cab, and the front four(2 per side) from the hood. and with the right ratchets and small hands, could be done pretty quickly. i only replaced three, but i could've done it in probably 30 minutes for 3, maybe 2 hours for all 8 if i hadn't stopped and taken a break.
i actually need to redo them because the stutter is back, so gotta replace the remaining 5.
