Help with my auto hubs

My company 00 X Limited came from the factory with Auto/Lock hubs but the original driver changed them to Free/Lock hubs. The vacuum lines are still there but plugged off. I got the okay from my boss to change them back to Auto/Lock hubs but don't know if any aftermarket hubs are available or if I have to go back to the dealer to get the original equipment Auto/Lock hubs. Anyone have any light they can shed on this? My boss borrows it sometimes to take home and plow the area around his house in the winter and hates having to get out and lock the hubs so he said change those god blessed things now!

Are they AFTERMARKET hubs?

Some OEM hubs say AUTO/LOCK and some say FREE/LOCK depending on the year. Try hooking the vacuum lines, put the hubs in FREE and see if they kick the hubs on.

Here you go Downriver, These are lised as 01-04, Check with the dealer before you bid to make sure, but I thought these are the same from late 99 -04.

No, they are stock Ford. They do not engage when in Free and you hit the switch. The vacuum line is plugged off and tied up. It took me a while to get him to go for this so I don't want to wait too long, he might change his mind. I wish they made an aftermarket version with the Auto selection but I can't find any, just the stock ones. I am apprehensive about buying used hubs cause I don't seem to get more than a couple years out of them. One is free moving, replaced last year. The other I have to move with pliers and has been on for 2 years now. After you move it with pliers it functions great. I am told there is no servicing these hubs, is that true?

I ordered replacements this morning from the dealer using my VIN. I went myself to pick them up along with a ujoint for the front axle and opened one of the boxes, sure enough going by the vin I got hubs that said AUTO/LOCK on them. I just hope everything else is still operational for use of the AUTO hubs.

Just aquired my 2003 7.3L PSD and saw this thread about 4x4 hubs. Mine say Auto or Lock and I cannot move them by hand. Is it OK to try pliers on them? Found an odd description in the Owners manual. (pg.137)"Engage or disengage the 4WD system by rotating the control for both front wheel hub loacks from the FREE or LOCK position, then manually engage or disengage the transfer case with the floor-mounted shifter" Are there any Ex's with a floor mounted shifter?

The boss is really gonna get upset when he goes to use the plow, and engages 4X4, and an auto hub fails to engage (because it will, they always do), and he has to get out to engage the hub to get it to work. Maybe he won't even do that, most think that the whole 4x4 system is broke. It only takes one hub to prevent the front from getting power. Not good when you need it, even worse when the boss needs it. Those hubs could not have been cheap from the dealer. You are gonna want to save the manual ones. Eventually, they will find their way back on the truck. Just can't beat the reliability of a manual locking hub. With them, you know it is locked, and you know when it is free.
To offset the inconvienience of getting out to lock the hubs, (you live in a snow area), why not just leave them locked?

My boss seldom drives it. It's my company vehicle. It was his idea to put it back to Auto but I don't think he realizes the cost. Thats why I dropped the truck off this morning to get the work done. I did tell the guy to save the hubs for me. The two hubs and a front axle ujoint cost $503. Sometimes I leave them locked but it makes it difficult to pull into a tight spot with them locked because of the ujoints binding.

I have to do that with my drivers side hub. They get gooked up and if you are lucky you can break it free using PB Blaster or something like that.

I drove home in a pretty decent snow storm today. Hubs were in AUTO and 4WD High was selected inside. I was playing around a bit and the a$$ end kept wanting to come around. Got home and did a show and tell with the wife to confirm the fronts weren't biting like the rears. Locked the hubs in (LOCKED) and could tell immediately that I was getting the true 4x4 experience.

I guess I'll ask the SD, but they just replaced my left front ball joints and I thought they said all the left side 4x4 hoses and such were included with that work.

Possibly but ,, you might damage the hub. I removed mine and cleaned them. Then I put the hubs vertical and used silicon lubricant sprayed in the end of the hub. I let the silicon soak in. Then turned them. Tap them lightly with rubber hammer to see if it will break loose on the bench. Once you get them to move slightly continue to use the silicon lube until they move freely.

My Ex. had a damaged hub when I bought it from someone using pliers. I had to replace it once the end seal is open to atmosphere. Jim

When i have had to use the pliers I didn't grab it and rip it. I worked it gently, as to not screw the whole lock mechanism up, and pop, it fell right in.
