I am interested in getting an Accufab intake elbow, but have some questions about the factory elbow on the 05 to 07 engines. Does anyone know why the factory elbow is designed the way it is? Sure it is restrictive , but why would they make the elbow with the outside of the elbow kinda sliced off with two different angles to it? Is it to balance the flow between both sides of the engine or what? Can't see why they would design something with such a strang shape for an elbow if there wasn't a reason. You would think it would be cheaper to just build an normal 90 degree elbow. I like the idea of a smooth elbow as it will lower the restriction in the intake which will lower load on the turbo which increases efficiency etc. But if there is a specific reason for the elbow to be the way it is I will leave well enough alone as I don't want any warrenty headaches down the road. With the warrenty costs on the 6.0 I think they will be looking for any excuss to deny a claim.
to be honest, i think it is the same elbow from a 03 model. this being the case, the 03s had the egr throttle plate and the room was needed for the harness.
I was out and had a close look at the elbow on my engine and it looks like the back side of the elbow was not part of the original casting. It looks like the elbow originally was like the line show in the picture below. Probably had too much restriction and cut the back of the elbow off and modified it to improve the flow instead of designing a new one. Just a guess, but if it is what they did it's sure a cheap way of doing it.
