Radiant Floor Heating?

I do alot of HVAC and control work but yet to have set one in the floor and espically a garage. I was going to use a heavy plastic tubing for strength and glycol for the hydronics. Ive been in aircraft hangers where they had been install and they or the shizzzz....

Anyone have one or seen one done?

I've seen it done before. Usually when a floor is being put down (poured).

Here is a link to a company that sell anything from plans to installation.

I've had radiant floor heating in my 42'x60'x14' garage for over a year. There is nothing better. You might spend more on equipment, but you'll save tons of money once it's in operation. I have over 2000' of 7/8" PEX connected to a Munchkin propane-fired boiler. I keep the temperature at 48 degrees, and there are no cold spots or hot spots in the garage. The system was designed by Radiantec (radiantec.com) and the manifold, pumps and tubing were purchased from them, but installed by me. I purchased the boiler from a local HVAC supply house. The antifreeze is glycol-based, but it must be formulated for use in boilers. The boiler manufacturer will specify which type to use. I just wish I had this type of heat in my house.

you cant beat it, it is the most even heat i have experienced. I put it in my house and garage, snow melts off vehicles fast and drys. I will never have another house or shop without it. Make sure you use pex or equiv. I used a company called Radiant Engineering in Bozeman, MT similar to what radiant tec does. If you get a company to design the layout and size the system you will be very happy. I have 7 zones and they assembled all the manifolds and wired the pumps in their shop. I simply had to place the tubes and hook everything up. It isnt the cheapest up front, but you will not be sorry!

I have it in my addition, it was installed for me prior to the pour and it works great. It was a fairly easy install and mine runs of the hot water tank (only 2 zones 550 sq ft) I will be building my own home starting in June of this year and plan on using this system throughout the whole house. I will also be using the icf forms for the walls so it should be nice and toasty

You will love it! Our house is also ICF, the temp is amazingly constant. the zones in the main part of the house only run in the morning on really cold nights (less than 20). we keep the bathrooms warmer because we like the warm tile.

I almost had an answer for ya. The plumbers were supposed to have been here today to start on the manifold and boiler(I'm going electric), but it was -10 degrees, so
I guess I'll have to wait. Finally got the place shelled though.

I can post some pics of the install we did in our garage (28x30) when I get home from work. The first floor is laid with the cement poured over it (6" slab) and second floor we did with aluminum tracks that are screwed to the subfloor from below.

mblayton & mudmaker,

Do your ICF walls go right to the roof or just to the main floor?

I heat my shop (NW of Toronto) with a 4800w construction heater hung on the wall and hooked up through a wall thermostat. Works great. I keep the shop at 10C and bump it when I go in to work there. I think next time I'd go radiant though but it depends on how much time you spend out there.

I haven't built yet, will be doing it starting in June but I already know that I will go right up to the roof with the icf
