I recently pruchased a 1977 F-150 XLT Ranger. It has a 460, C-6 automatic. I can not get it to run correctly. I have put on a good carburator, changed the ignition module, coil, distributor, spark plugs, cap and rotor, plug wires, and have set the timing to 12 degrees BTDC.
It will start (sometimes) and will barely stay running. It is like it is hitting on 1 or 2 cylinders. I thought the cam shaft might be broken and took off the valve covers. I turned the motor over, and all valves opened and closed.
I have two reasons(neither of which make it excusable)
1)I have what some call a "one track mind" so I tend to forget things fairly quickly if i move my train of thought- so I just type in the 'quick reply' box...
2)It's just easier to use the quick reply box than to edit.
Editing can be good or bad...the "vets" and at least one newbie on here know enough to back up and read the edited posts while most other newbies prolly don't..and watch for new posts to appear.
If I didn't edit, I'd prolly have 1,700 posts by now.
And I didn't edit the above post for this reason: Some newbie's will read this and get the idea to back up.

I would say you have the wrong firing order or your wires are mixed up. It happens.
Don't set the balancer to 12 BTDC, set it at zero and get the motor running and then move the distributor.
If you think its right, have somebody crank the motor and move the distributor by hand a little bit in either direction. Be careful, its liable to backfire out of the carb and that can shoot flame.
