Hi guys. This is my first port here and I am really excited that I found this site. I have a 76 f150 with a 360 4 sp manual. I inherited it from my father and rebuilt the engine by boring .40 with an rv cam, holley weiand intake, and edelbrock 600 carb. The truck ran very well for a while but I was concerned that it always felt like it was missing. I know beleive that was the rv cam doing its job but i went and had someone retime it. He said that my timing was at 23 degrees with the vac advance and bumped it down to like 12. Said that the engine would last longer but I'd have less power. The thing has never been the same since. Sometimes if I really get on it it will pop in the carb and blow the vac port caps (rubber) off. I will stop and put them back on and all is well. This is not normal though. I have the suspicion that this is timing related. It would also bog down after being on the highway after running about 2k rpms for 20 minutes or so. It also always reeks of gas everytime I start it to let it run. (not daily driver) I can not figure out what I am supposed to do. I bumped up timing but dont yet know if this is the solution. Any ideas?
The timing spec made for engine is considered in the actual timing when vacuum to the Vacuum advance is applied.
That someone who retimed it need a wake up call.
Put it back to where it was.
backfiring out the carb is from the engine being "out of time"
Also keep in mind that w/ that RV cam it really isnt going to be close to the spec. for the engine either as it isnt factory anymore. Bump the timing back up again and remember... if it aint broke dont fix it haha.

I just know that the cam is one step above stock if that helps.
another Q for yall. My dist cap is the socket type. I really want to change the cap out for a post type cap and get wires that work with it. It just seems like I would always be sure of my conection. With The socket type I always have to work that the end of the wire has slipped up into the boot and isnt making connection.
